Architect Shafique Rahman of Bangladesh has been awarded Second Position in the prestigious ARCASIA International Design Competition, and the achievement has been featured in the e-newspaper The Policy Times. The competition, titled “The Contribution of Green Building in the Fight against COVID-19,” was organized by the Architects Regional Council of Asia (ARCASIA) through its Committee on Green and Sustainable Architecture. Architects from across Asia were nominated by their respective ARCASIA member organizations, with projects evaluated for innovation, sustainability, and relevance in addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ar. Shafique Rahman’s award-winning proposal focused on a specialized Green Building design that responds to public health challenges through architecture. The project emphasized reduced reliance on artificial resources, minimal greenhouse gas emissions, and efficient operation through renewable energy systems. By integrating natural ventilation, abundant daylight, cross-ventilation strategies, and healthy indoor environments, the design demonstrated how green buildings can play a critical role in reducing the spread of airborne diseases while enhancing mental and physical well-being—particularly relevant during pandemic conditions. The project also addressed the Asian climatic context, highlighting passive cooling and heat regulation strategies suitable for humid and high-temperature regions.

Ar. Shafique Rahman holds a Master of Design Science (Sustainable Design) from the University of Sydney, Australia (2015) and a Bachelor of Architecture from Khulna University, Bangladesh (2012). His professional experience includes working with Crawford Architects in Sydney and collaborating with AIA-registered architects during his internship at Ideas Architects. After returning to Bangladesh in 2016, he founded Trikon Architects in Dhaka, where he currently serves as Principal Architect. He is a Registered Architect and Fellow of the Bangladesh Institute of Architects (MIAB), a member of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA – SONA), Bangladesh Architects Australia (BAA), and has been associated with several respected professional institutions.

In addition to this ARCASIA recognition (2020), Ar. Shafique Rahman has been nominated for Exhibition and Presentation at the “Vulnerabilities and Inequalities Design Work Session” of the 27th World Congress of Architects – UIA 2021 (Rio de Janeiro). He has also served as a speaker at the International Conference on Mosque Architecture (ICMA) 2019 in Malaysia and at ARCASIA Forum 20 held in Dhaka. Alongside his professional practice, he is currently an Assistant Professor at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST).

The feature in The Policy Times highlights not only an individual achievement, but also the growing global recognition of sustainable architectural practices emerging from Bangladesh—reinforcing Trikon Architects’ commitment to environmentally responsible, research-driven, and socially responsive design.
